WhatsApp is a widely used messaging app in India, attracting millions of users. However, its popularity has also led to an increase in scams, prompting the platform to take action against suspicious accounts. Recently, WhatsApp banned over 8 million accounts in India for violating its privacy policies. According to their latest transparency report, which complies with Indian regulations, 8,458,000 users were banned in August alone as part of WhatsApp’s efforts to combat illegal activities and enforce its policies.

Between August 1 and August 31, WhatsApp blocked a total of 8,458,000 Indian accounts. Out of these, 1,661,000 accounts were proactively banned, identified by WhatsApp’s automated systems before any user complaints were made. These systems detect suspicious behaviors like bulk messaging, which can indicate scams. In August 2024, WhatsApp also received 10,707 user complaints through its grievance mechanisms, taking action on 93 of those reports. The complaints were categorized into ban appeals, account support, safety issues, and other user concerns.
