WhatsApp to Soon Let Android Users Set Profile Pictures Directly from Facebook and Instagram
In a bid to deepen integration across its platforms, Meta is testing a new WhatsApp feature for Android that will allow users to set their profile picture by directly selecting an image from their Facebook or Instagram accounts. The feature, now available to select users via WhatsApp beta version 2.25.21.23, aims to simplify display picture (DP) updates and streamline identity management across Meta’s ecosystem.
Until now, WhatsApp users had to manually upload images saved from other platforms. With the new update, users can conveniently pick a profile photo from Facebook or Instagram within WhatsApp’s settings, eliminating the need for downloads or screenshots.
The revamped profile editing menu now includes options to choose a DP from the camera, gallery, avatars, AI-generated images, or directly from linked Meta accounts. This feature will be particularly helpful for those who maintain a consistent image across apps and want to keep them synced effortlessly.
To use the new function, users must link their WhatsApp account to Meta’s Accounts Center—a centralized hub enabling cross-app features like status sharing and business messaging. Meta enabled WhatsApp integration with the Accounts Center earlier this year to encourage smoother interaction between its platforms.
Beyond just ease of use, the feature also addresses a practical concern: users who’ve lost access to the original high-quality versions of photos used on Facebook or Instagram will now be able to retrieve them for WhatsApp without compromising image quality.
This update is part of Meta’s broader push for unified services. Recent efforts include the ability to share Instagram Stories directly to WhatsApp and the option for Instagram business profiles to add a WhatsApp contact button.
Though not widely available yet, the beta release indicates a full rollout may be on the horizon. Android users should watch for upcoming updates that enable this streamlined profile sync.
As Meta continues to bridge its platforms, features like this mark a step toward a more seamless and cohesive user experience across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
