Jackie and Ayesha Shroff’s bold bet on Sony TV in the 1990s turned into one of Bollywood’s greatest wealth-building stories.

Bollywood often dazzles with glamour and stardom, but Jackie Shroff and his wife Ayesha Shroff’s story is one of foresight, resilience, and sharp business instinct. What began as a modest ₹1 lakh investment in Sony Entertainment Television at its India launch grew into an astonishing ₹100 crore fortune in just 15 years, a move that later saved them from financial collapse.

The Sony TV Gamble
In the early 1990s, as India embraced liberalisation, global media giants like Star and Sony entered the cable television market. Jackie and Ayesha Shroff were among the pioneers who helped Sony Entertainment Television set up its India operations.

Ayesha Shroff, who was Miss Young India 1980 before becoming an actress and producer, recalled in an interview with Zero1 Hustle by Zerodha that Sony was her “first brush with a corporate giant.” Jackie contributed his stardom, while others in their seven-member team brought in business and technical expertise. Convincing Sony to partner with them took persistence, but the deal marked the beginning of one of the most lucrative investments in Bollywood.

Boom to Bankruptcy — and Back
At the peak of his stardom in the 1980s, Jackie Shroff delivered blockbusters like HeroKarmaRam Lakhan, and Tridev. But by the late 1990s, younger stars had taken center stage, and Jackie shifted to character roles. His home production Boom flopped in the early 2000s, pushing him into near bankruptcy.

Yet, his early bet on Sony paid off handsomely. By the mid-2000s, when Jackie exited the deal, his ₹1 lakh stake had swelled to around ₹100 crore, a staggering one million per cent return on investment. This windfall not only rescued the Shroff family but also transformed them into one of Bollywood’s wealthiest households.

Building an Empire Beyond Films
The Sony payout gave the Shroffs the financial muscle to expand into new ventures. Jackie and Ayesha invested in hospitality, sports leagues, and other businesses, diversifying their wealth beyond the film industry. Today, Jackie Shroff’s net worth is estimated to be around ₹400 crore.

Despite his financial success off-screen, Jackie continues to remain active in films. He was recently seen in Housefull 5Good Bad Ugly, and Tanvi The Great. His upcoming project, Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, co-starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, is slated for release in 2026.
