The Maharashtra government has introduced a new uniform policy for health science professionals, making white aprons mandatory across all 46 state-run medical institutions. The directive, issued by the Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER), applies to medical professionals across various disciplines, including allopathy, dentistry, Ayurveda, and homeopathy.

Dr. Ajay Chandanwale, Director of DMER, emphasized the importance of this rule, citing widespread non-compliance in health science institutions. In a letter to institutions, he underscored the ethical obligation of faculty members, teachers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, resident doctors, and other healthcare professionals to wear aprons during classroom sessions and patient care.

A DMER official explained that white aprons help distinguish medical professionals in healthcare settings, making it easier for patients to identify and seek assistance from them.

The directive specifies that aprons must be white, clean, neatly worn, and fully buttoned. Carrying them by hand or draping them over the shoulders is not permitted.

Institutions have been instructed to ensure strict compliance. Staff, students, or resident doctors found without proper attire will need to provide a verbal justification, while repeated violations will require a written explanation.
