Bag checks at retail outlets often depend on the legal framework of each country. In most places, there are no specific laws regulating these checks, but businesses are allowed to set reasonable entry and exit conditions to maintain security and prevent losses. In India, DMart — one of the largest supermarket chains — is a prime example of such a policy in action.
With over 415 stores spread across 12 Indian states and union territories, DMart caters to millions of customers every month. Some shoppers visit weekly or even daily, while others stock up monthly. Despite the massive footfall, the chain maintains uniform policies at all locations, including random bag and bill checks at the exit.
The move is largely aimed at tackling shoplifting, which has become a growing concern in certain states. At the exit, staff do not stamp receipts immediately after billing. Instead, they cross-check at least four items from the trolley with the bill before marking it. This ensures that no unbilled products are taken out and that all items have been scanned correctly.
These checks also help detect billing errors caused by human mistakes or technical glitches, such as incorrect pricing, wrong weights, or missed scans. By identifying such issues immediately, both customers and the store avoid disputes later.
Another benefit is discouraging impulse theft, where customers may unintentionally take items without paying. The very presence of random checks acts as a deterrent, promoting honesty and responsible shopping.
For many customers, the process also reinforces trust in the brand. It shows that DMart follows strict procedures, which they see as a sign of professionalism and accountability.
An additional layer of security comes from CCTV footage. During checks, customers pause briefly, allowing cameras to capture clear facial images. If theft is detected later, this footage can help identify suspects and aid in legal proceedings.
While some shoppers may find the procedure slightly time-consuming, DMart believes it plays a crucial role in loss prevention, billing accuracy, and customer safety, ensuring a secure and well-organized shopping environment across all its stores.
