A recent media report claiming that banks across India will transition to a five-day workweek from April 2025 has been dismissed as false by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

The report, originally published by Lokmat Times, suggested that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had issued a new regulation mandating banks to remain closed on all Saturdays. However, PIB Fact Check has clarified that no such directive has been released by the RBI.

The misleading report created confusion among customers and banking employees, raising concerns about changes in operational days. PIB has urged the public to rely on RBI’s official website (www.rbi.org.in) for verified updates regarding banking regulations.

As of now, banks in India continue to follow their existing work schedule, operating on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays of the month while remaining closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, along with Sundays and designated public holidays. The RBI has not made any official announcement regarding a shift to a five-day workweek.

That said, discussions on this matter have been ongoing between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and banking unions. Employee unions have been advocating for a five-day workweek to improve work-life balance and align with international banking practices. While the proposal remains under consideration, no final decision has been made.

For now, the current banking schedule remains unchanged, and customers are advised to verify any claims about banking regulations through official sources.
