Will Pune Be On The Growth Path After Mahayuti's Landslide Victory?

The BJP-led Mahayuti’s historic landslide in the 2024 assembly elections in Maharashtra has raised hopes for good governance in the state. In Pune, the BJP and its alliance partner NCP won 10 out of 11 seats, rousing fresh hopes of better governance. However, the real challenge lies ahead, as the Mahayuti government must now translate its electoral victory into tangible results on the ground.

One of the critical issues that need to be addressed urgently is Pune’s worsening traffic congestion. As the 8th largest city in India, Pune has a population of 10 million with 7.2 million registered vehicles, with 1,300 new vehicles being added to the roads every day. The city’s road infrastructure is woefully inadequate, with just 6% area under roads, compared to the required 10% to 15%.

The Mahayuti government must take immediate action to address this issue. Low-cost solutions such as improving public transportation, providing last-mile connectivity, and staggering working hours can make a significant impact. The city needs a robust public transportation network with high-frequency bus fleets, auto rickshaw services, and two-wheeler taxis to provide last-mile connectivity from metro stations.

The local NGO’s movement must mobilize citizen-activists, like-minded NGOs, and compel the ruling politicians to show results on a year-on-year basis. With the Mahayuti government’s rich mandate, there is no excuse for not delivering results.

As the city looks forward to a brighter future, the question on everyone’s mind is: Will Pune be on the growth path after Mahayuti’s landslide victory? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the people of Pune are watching, and they expect results.
