Passenger evades police after hours-long drama; Railways promises action

A dramatic scene unfolded on the Seemanchal Express during its journey from Delhi to Bihar when a woman, allegedly travelling without a ticket in the 2nd AC coach, created chaos after refusing to cooperate with railway staff.

The trouble began when the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) asked the woman to produce her ticket. Instead of complying, she engaged in heated arguments, gave evasive replies, and hurled accusations of misbehaviour at railway staff. Eyewitnesses said she even assaulted the TTE during the altercation.

Videos of the incident, now viral on social media, show the woman repeatedly deflecting questions and responding rudely. At one point, she claimed to be linked with judicial work, allegedly to intimidate officials. Fellow passengers, however, sided with the TTE, with one person remarking, “Don’t misuse women’s rights to say anything to anyone.”

Despite attempts by railway police to calm her down, the confrontation continued for hours, leaving passengers frustrated. On arrival at Katihar station the next morning, the woman was deboarded, but she managed to escape into the crowd before police could apprehend her.

Katihar Railway Police have registered a case and are working to establish her identity.

The incident has drawn widespread criticism online. One X user wrote, “Firstly, she is travelling without a ticket. Secondly, with this attitude. As she knows nothing is going to happen. Women’s empowerment ke naam par misuse of law!”

Responding to the viral video, Railway Seva posted, “We regret the inconvenience! This is not the type of experience Railways strive to deliver.”

The altercation has reignited debates about the misuse of rights and the challenges faced by railway staff in enforcing rules onboard.
