The ambitious 34-kilometre underground tunnel connecting Khadakwasla Dam to Phursungi is set to begin construction by April 2025. A private contractor has been awarded the work order, marking a significant step forward for the ₹1,600-crore project.

The tunnel is designed to address issues of water loss and pollution caused by rapid urbanization and encroachments along the existing canal system. Once completed, it will enhance the water supply for irrigation and drinking purposes in the Pune region.

The project is expected to be completed within four years. Authorities are simultaneously working on obtaining the necessary environmental clearance, forest department permissions, and land acquisition.  The project received administrative approval in August 2023, with a budget provision of ₹2,190.47 crore.

A proposal for the environmental clearance certificate has already been sent to the state environment department. Officials are optimistic about clearing these hurdles on time to meet the project’s deadlines.

The tunnel aims to reduce water wastage and improve distribution efficiency, benefiting both urban and rural areas. It is also expected to mitigate the impact of encroachments on the canal network, which has led to significant water pollution over the years.

With a clear timeline and funding in place, the project represents a major infrastructural development for the Pune region. It is seen as a critical step in ensuring sustainable water management for both irrigation and drinking needs.

If executed as planned, the Khadakwasla-Phursungi tunnel will be a game-changer for Pune’s water supply system, addressing long-standing concerns and providing relief to the region’s growing population.
