Work Pressure Claims Life: Bank Manager Dies by Suicide at Office, Sparks Concern Over Job Stress
In a heartbreaking reminder of the rising pressure faced by professionals, a senior bank official was found dead late Thursday night inside the branch he managed in Baramati. The police have confirmed it as a case of suicide, with a note left behind mentioning intense work-related stress.
The deceased, Shivshankar Mitra, was in his late 40s and serving as the chief manager of a nationalised bank. He had recently resigned from his post, citing health concerns and an unmanageable workload. His resignation was submitted on July 11, and he was currently serving his notice period.
According to officials from the Baramati police station, Mitra stayed behind after banking hours and told the rest of the staff to head home, assuring them he would close the branch himself. The security guard also left the premises at around 9:30 pm.
Notably, before the tragic act, Mitra had asked a colleague to bring a rope—a request that, in hindsight, raises serious concerns. Later, at approximately 10:00 pm, CCTV cameras captured him hanging himself inside the bank premises.
His wife grew worried when he didn’t return home and stopped responding to calls. She reached the bank around midnight and noticed that the lights were still on. After getting no response from inside, she called other staff members for help. Upon unlocking the branch, they discovered Mitra’s body.
A handwritten note recovered from the scene clearly cited “unbearable work pressure” as the reason behind his action. However, police officials stated that no individual was named or held responsible in the note. Mitra was also said to be undergoing medical treatment, though the exact nature of his condition has not been disclosed.
A case has been registered and the investigation is ongoing.
