The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) is blocking foreign and local phone numbers that fraudsters and anti-national elements are using to commit cybercrimes and issue threats, according to officials.

These calls result in complaints, which is why the numbers are blocked.

According to officials, the government has blocked more than 1,500 callers in the last three to four days, including international numbers, after verifying the legitimacy of the calls made by telecom operators.

The officials stated that criminal investigations by security agencies will not stop, but miscreants will not be permitted to abuse telecom resources.

Among the prominent names on the blocked caller list is Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a designated terrorist who has been threatening to attack Air India, the BSE, and the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

According to an official, after verifying the information from international gateways and telecom operators, the government blocked the numbers from which the calls were coming within a day of learning about Pannun’s threats.

In order to obtain information about these callers, the DoT is also monitoring foreign gateways. Additionally, telcos have been instructed to report any calls regarding suspicious calls received by their customer care centers to the relevant department.

Financial fraud committed by callers from international numbers has increased recently. Without any paperwork, they have been using a variety of apps that provide international numbers with an eSIM.
