In a recent inspection conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in Nagpur, concerning findings have emerged regarding hygiene standards in restaurants. 

Out of 200 restaurants inspected, a staggering 80% failed to meet FSSAI’s criteria for cleanliness and safety. This revelation raises concerns about the health implications for diners in the city.

Hygiene Violations :

The growing food culture in Nagpur has seen an increase in people dining out, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety and hygiene regulations. FSSAI’s inspection uncovered various violations, with some restaurants failing to meet essential cleanliness standards. The authority has issued instructions for rectifying these errors promptly to safeguard the health of citizens.

Changing Lifestyles and Food Safety:

With changing lifestyles, there is a rising trend of dining out after work. To ensure food safety and hygiene in restaurants, regulations have been established. FSSAI, as the regulatory body, plays a crucial role in monitoring compliance with these standards. The recent inspection revealed a disparity, with some food vendors upholding hygiene standards while others were found lacking.

Stringent Rules for Food Safety:

To address these concerns directly linked to public health, strict rules have been enacted. Restaurants are required to adhere to guidelines such as maintaining clean kitchens, screening open areas, tiled walls, proper lighting, clean chimneys, and adherence to food preparation standards. Employees are mandated to wear caps and gloves, and regular pest control is emphasized.

Eat Right Challenge’ Campaign:

The inspection, conducted under the ‘Eat Right Challenge’ campaign, involved an agency of experts appointed by FSSAI. Restaurants meeting the hygiene criteria will receive a certificate of cleanliness, valid for two years. This initiative aims to enhance awareness about food safety and encourage compliance among eateries.
