Last week, Pune district faced severe disruptions due to unprecedented heavy rains, marking the highest rainfall in 32 years. The downpour led to extensive flooding across the city, revealing vulnerabilities in municipal infrastructure as water inundated homes and settlements. Despite these challenges, Pune has witnessed an influx of tourists from across Maharashtra, drawn by monsoon tourism to scenic spots. However, recent tragic events have prompted authorities to take drastic measures. Following a fatal accident at Bhushi Dam, dangerous tourist spots with flowing water in Pune district have been closed. Consequently, Sinhagad Fort, a cherished destination for locals and visitors alike, has been shut down indefinitely.

The decision comes after a significant landslide on the road leading to the fort, caused by heavy rains. Massive trees and debris collapsed onto the pathway, necessitating closure as the forest department undertakes clearance operations. Officials anticipate several days of work due to the extensive amount of stones and soil that need to be removed.

The closure of Sinhagad Fort adds to the aftermath of recent landslides in ghat areas and regions surrounding hills and forts. Multiple landslides this week have resulted in significant cracks and debris on the road, further complicating efforts to reopen the site to vehicles and tourists.
