22-Year-Old Tourist Falls Into Deep Gorge at Naneghat During Monsoon Trip; Search Operation Underway Using Mobile Location
Pune: A tragic incident occurred at the popular monsoon tourist destination of Naneghat in Junnar taluka of Pune district on Sunday morning, where a 22-year-old man allegedly slipped into a deep gorge amid dense fog. Police, local villagers, and rescue teams have launched a search operation, but continuous rainfall, poor visibility, and the difficult terrain are making rescue efforts challenging.
The missing youth has been identified as Datta Vinayak Londhe (22), a resident of Pargaon Shingve in Ambegaon taluka, Pune district. He had visited Naneghat with three friends for monsoon tourism.
According to preliminary information, the group was walking near the cliff edge when dense fog covered the area. Datta reportedly lost his balance and fell into the deep valley.
Following the incident, his friends immediately alerted local residents and informed the police. Search operations began soon after, but rescuers have been facing difficulties due to the steep gorge, slippery conditions, and extremely low visibility.
Police have also attempted to trace Datta’s mobile phone. As the phone is still ringing, officials believe it may still be located inside the gorge. Preliminary mobile location data reportedly indicates that the phone is towards the lower side of Naneghat, in the direction of the rural areas of Thane district. Based on this, authorities are planning to deploy a rescue team from the Thane side instead of descending from the top, as that route is expected to provide easier access to the location.
Police presence has been increased at the site, while the local administration, villagers, and rescue personnel are working in coordination. An official rescue team is expected to intensify the search operation upon reaching the spot.
Every monsoon, thousands of tourists visit Naneghat for its scenic beauty. However, dense fog, slippery cliffs, deep valleys, and unsafe behaviour continue to pose serious risks. Authorities have once again appealed to visitors to avoid venturing into dangerous areas, refrain from risky stunts or selfies near cliff edges, and check weather conditions before planning their visit.
The search operation is still in progress, and further updates are expected after officials provide more information on the rescue efforts.
