Sarabjot Singh, a 22-year-old Olympic bronze medalist and Indian shooter, has declined a high-ranking job offer from the Haryana government. Despite being offered the role of Deputy Director in the Sports Department, Sarabjot has chosen to stay committed to his shooting career.

Upon returning to his hometown, Dheen village in Ambala district, Haryana, Sarabjot was met with an enthusiastic reception. The village celebrated his Olympic success with drums, garlands, and fireworks. Family, friends, and villagers gathered to acknowledge his dedication, with the young athlete first seeking blessings from his parents, Harjeet Kaur and Jitender Singh, before joining the festivities.

“The job is good, but I will not do it right now. I want to work on my shooting first,” Sarabjot stated, highlighting his priorities. He also noted the pressure from his family to secure a stable job but emphasized his commitment to shooting. “My family has also been asking me to get a decent job, but I want to do shooting… I don’t want to go against some decisions that I have made, so I cannot do a job right now,” he added.

Sarabjot’s decision comes on the heels of his success at the Paris Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside Manu Bhaker. Manu Bhaker’s achievement in this event also marked her as the first Indian athlete in history to win two medals at a single Olympic Games, further adding to the significance of their victory.

While some may be surprised by Sarabjot’s refusal of a government job, his choice highlights his dedication to his sport. His continued focus on shooting has already brought him international success, and his decision suggests he is aiming even higher, possibly targeting a gold medal at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
