India to celebrate its first National Space Day On August 23

India is gearing up to observe its inaugural National Space Day on August 23, 2024. On this date in 2023, Chandrayaan-3 successfully achieved a safe and soft landing of the Vikram Lander on the moon’s surface. With this feat, India became the fourth nation to land on the moon and the first to do so near the lunar southern polar region.
To honor the remarkable success of the Chandrayaan-3 Mission, which included the safe landing of the Vikram Lander and the deployment of the Pragyaan rover on the moon’s surface, the Union Government has officially designated August 23rd as “National Space Day.”
This achievement is being celebrated nationwide, aiming to engage and inspire the youth in the fields of Space Science and Technology.
To celebrate this historic achievement, the Department of Fisheries (DoF) under the Government of India (GoI) is hosting a series of seminars and demonstrations aimed at raising awareness about the application of space technologies in the fisheries sector. These events are being organized in partnership with various coastal states and union territories, as well as ISRO and DoF field offices.
Previously, a notification from the Department of Space highlighted that India became the first country to successfully land near the moon’s South Pole with the Chandrayaan-3 Mission.
“Following the successful Chandrayaan-3 Mission on August 23, 2023, which saw the landing of the Vikram lander and the deployment of the Pragyaan Rover on the lunar surface, India has joined an elite group of space-faring nations, becoming the fourth country to land on the moon and the first to land near the moon’s South Pole,” stated the notification.
“It further noted that the results of this historic mission will benefit humanity in the years ahead.”
The notification emphasized that this day represents a significant milestone in the nation’s advancements in space missions, aiming to inspire younger generations to develop a greater interest in pursuing STEM fields and providing a substantial boost to the space sector.
“The Government of India has declared August 23 of each year as ‘National Space Day’ to honor this landmark achievement,” it concluded.
