NASA has issued a warning about a massive asteroid, 2024 ON, which is set to pass close to Earth on September 15, 2024. Measuring 720 feet in diameter, roughly equivalent to the size of two cricket pitches, this colossal asteroid will come within 620,000 miles of our planet—approximately 2.6 times the distance from Earth to the Moon.

Despite its impressive size and high velocity of 25,000 mph, the asteroid’s trajectory poses no immediate threat of collision. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, has been closely monitoring the asteroid using advanced radar and optical telescopes. Ongoing analyses aim to understand its size, shape and composition, and to explore potential strategies for future mitigation if needed.

NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) continues to emphasize the importance of preparedness in addressing near-Earth objects. The office collaborates with international agencies, including the European Space Agency (ESA), to study the asteroid’s composition and gain insights into the early formation of the solar system.

The public will have the chance to observe the asteroid’s approach, with live coverage provided by the Virtual Telescope Project. NASA will also keep the public informed through regular updates on its website and social media platforms. As the encounter date nears, scientists and researchers will continue to gather data, enhancing our understanding of the universe and the forces shaping it.
