India's First Air Train: A ₹2000 Crore Project Offering Free Travel
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport to revolutionize inter-terminal transport with a free-to-use, automated Air Train by 2027.
India is set to launch its first Air Train, a fully automated system designed to streamline passenger transfers between terminals at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). Often referred to as a Sky Train. The Air Train will cover a 7.5 km route, connecting Terminal 1 with Terminals 2 and 3, along with stops at Aerocity and Cargo City.
The project, estimated at ₹2000 crores, is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Designed to improve connectivity, it will reduce transfer time for the airport’s 70 million annual passengers, a number anticipated to double in the next 6-8 years. The Air Train will operate continuously and passengers will enjoy free rides, replacing the current shuttle bus system.
This infrastructure upgrade aims to enhance convenience, cut travel time and improve airport traffic management, offering a major boost to IGI’s overall efficiency.
