Chennai Rains: Residents Move Two-Wheelers to Higher Floors to Avoid Flood Damage
As Chennai faces heavy rains, residents of low-lying areas like Velachery are taking unusual steps to protect their vehicles from flooding.
On Tuesday, after heavy rains hit Chennai, several residents resorted to innovative ways to safeguard their two-wheelers from floodwaters. In Velachery, an area notorious for severe waterlogging, residents have been hauling their scooters, bikes and even bicycles to the upper floors of their apartment buildings. One resident, Kavitha Vishnu Vardhini, shared a striking image on social media platform X, showing the fourth-floor corridor of her building lined with vehicles.
Velachery’s residents are all too familiar with the flooding that follows the monsoon. Kavitha mentioned that last year, the apartment’s ground floor parking was completely submerged during the rains, prompting many to take extra precautions this year. Responding to her post, another user revealed that he had parked three bikes inside his own room as a safeguard.
The heavy downpour, which began on Monday night, has also affected other areas of Chennai, including Koyambedu, Guindy and Madipakkam. These low-lying regions are facing significant flooding, leading to traffic disruptions across the city. As the rains persist, residents are finding creative solutions to prevent their belongings from being damaged.
