Pune's Declining Girl Birth Rate Sparks Urgent Concerns: Only 898 Girls for Every 1,000 Boys

In Pune, the city renowned for its pioneering efforts in women’s education led by the Mahatma and Savitribai Phule, a troubling reality is emerging: the birth rate of girls is alarmingly low. Recent data from the public health department reveals that in the past year, for every 1,000 boys born in Pune city and district, only 898 girls were registered. This stark statistic highlights a disturbing trend that reflects societal attitudes towards female births, suggesting that the celebration of daughters remains woefully inadequate.

The issue becomes even more pressing when we consider the ideal “sex ratio,” which should ideally be balanced between boys and girls. In 2023, Pune’s urban areas recorded a ratio of 897 girls per 1,000 boys, while rural areas fared slightly better at 901. These figures underscore a pervasive issue that has serious implications for gender equality in the region.

Furthermore, there is a disturbing trend of female foeticide occurring even before birth. Numerous instances of illegal abortions following gender determination tests have surfaced. Six months ago, a shocking case was uncovered in a van in Malegaon, Baramati, where gender determination practices were exposed. Notably, the accused had previously faced multiple arrests for similar offenses.

While discussions around gender equality are frequently held, the state government’s efforts to empower women—such as providing a monthly grant of ₹1,500—have not adequately addressed the declining birth rate of girls, indicating a lack of commitment at both governmental and social levels.

An official stated that in order to combat this decline, the health department has initiated inspections of facilities involved in gender determination. Actions have been taken against those conducting illegal tests in Baramati and Narayangaon this year. Ongoing awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate the public about the issue. Citizens are encouraged to report any illegal gender determination activities to health authorities or the “Amchi Mulgi” portal.

Statewide Gender Ratio

While the gender ratio in Pune has shown a decline, the overall statistics for the state are similarly disappointing. Across Maharashtra, the birth rate stands at 907 girls for every 1,000 boys. This figure represents the average across all districts in the state, further emphasizing the need for urgent action.
