Google Engineer's Rejection Letter Goes Viral for Unusual Reason
Delhi-based Google software engineer Annu Sharma has gone viral after sharing an unexpected rejection letter from a job application. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sharma revealed that a startup rejected her for being “too good” for the role she applied for. Expressing her disbelief, Sharma tweeted, “Didn’t know you could be rejected for being too good.”

The rejection letter explained the unusual decision, stating, “Your qualifications significantly surpass the requirements of the role. Our experience shows that candidates with higher qualifications often find the work unfulfilling and tend to leave shortly after joining.”
Since her post, which was shared just a day ago, it has garnered over 55,000 views and sparked widespread conversation. One user shared a similar experience, commenting, “I was recently rejected not for being overqualified, but because I attended a higher-ranking college. I told them I wouldn’t leave, but they were firm.”
Other users echoed Sharma’s story, with one commenting, “I’ve been told three times in interviews that I’m overqualified, and they assumed I would leave the company after a few months.” Another user recounted how a friend was rejected for an entry-level job after completing a Master’s degree but was later offered a senior role.
While many shared their frustrations, some social media users appreciated the transparency. “The recruiter could have made up an excuse, but they were honest. In the end, it might have saved both sides from a mismatch,” one user remarked.
