Pune: The city will now implement nightly checkpoints to take action against drunk drivers. For this purpose, the traffic police have identified 27 locations for the initiative. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has announced that an officer of the rank of Assistant Police Commissioner will be appointed to oversee these operations.

To address the issue of reckless drivers, checkpoints will be set up every night from 11 PM to 3 AM across various parts of the city. The selected locations include 27 spots in both the city and suburbs. A total of 125 police personnel, including Assistant Police Commissioners, will participate in this campaign to ensure discipline among errant drivers.

Action has already begun against drivers coming from the wrong direction, and vehicles violating traffic rules will be seized, according to Amitesh Kumar. This initiative will be carried out under the guidance of Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil and Deputy Commissioner of Police Amol Zende.

To ensure the proper functioning of these operations, the breathalyzer equipment will be utilized to test suspected drivers. After a driver is tested, the mouthpiece of the device will be replaced and destroyed to address cleanliness concerns and reduce the risk of contamination from multiple users. This measure aims to alleviate complaints about hygiene from drivers undergoing testing.
