Pune Municipal Corporation Begins Fire Safety Inspections At Study Centres Following Recent Fire Incident
In response to a recent fire at a study centre in Navi Peth, which destroyed furniture, books, and other materials, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated inspections at study centres across the city. The incident, which raised concerns over student safety, has prompted the PMC to examine fire safety measures in these centres.
PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. announced that study centres located in residential societies will now be subject to commercial tax. The inspection will verify each centre’s building use, fire no-objection certificates (NOCs), fire extinguisher availability, and other safety facilities to prevent further accidents.
Pune attracts students from across India for higher education and competitive exam preparation, especially in areas like Sadashiv Peth and Navi Peth where many study halls operate—some within residential buildings. According to PMC Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale, the civic body is addressing local complaints about noise from study centres, aiming to balance resident concerns with the needs of students to ensure a safe study environment without disrupting their academic pursuits.
