Pune: PMRDA Plans Six New Roads In Hinjawadi to Improve Connectivity And Reduce Traffic Congestion
Pune, July 23: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has proposed the development of six priority roads in and around the Hinjewadi IT hub to improve traffic flow, enhance connectivity, and address recurring infrastructure issues, including waterlogging during the monsoon.
The initiative comes as rapid residential and commercial growth in the Hinjewadi-Maan-Marunji belt continues to put pressure on the existing road network. Every year, heavy rainfall leads to severe traffic disruptions in the area, with waterlogged roads causing long delays for commuters.
The six proposed road stretches are:
- Surya Hospital to Thakar Vasti – 3.74 km
- Surya Hospital to Sakhare Vasti (Hinjewadi Phase I) – 1.30 km
- Marunji to Shani Mandir – 3.5 km
- Nande to Maan – 1.8 km
- Marunji to Shani Mandir (Wakad) – 3.5 km
- Thakar Vasti to Maan – 3 km
The proposed network will include ring roads and Development Plan (DP) roads with widths ranging from 18 to 36 metres. PMRDA has initiated the process of appointing a consultant to prepare the Request for Proposal (RFP) and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project.
The DPR will include detailed road designs, cross-sections, traffic and pedestrian studies, topographical and utility surveys, geotechnical investigations, and an assessment of the existing drainage system. It will also outline plans for road widening, junction improvements, stormwater drainage, sewerage networks, water supply pipelines, electricity infrastructure, street lighting, and utility ducts.
Additionally, the report will cover the design of footpaths, medians, kerbs, road signage, and pavement structures. The choice between rigid and flexible pavements will be determined based on soil conditions and projected traffic volume.
PMRDA Chief Engineer Shivprasad Bagdi said the authority is prioritising the development of alternative road corridors to reduce congestion in the Hinjewadi region.
“The DPR preparation process for the proposed roads will begin shortly. The project will focus not only on widening roads and improving intersections but also on strengthening civic infrastructure such as drainage, sewerage, water supply, electricity, and street lighting. Once completed, these roads will significantly improve connectivity and provide much-needed relief to commuters and residents,” Bagdi said.
According to the project schedule, the last date for submission of proposals is July 24, while technical bids will be opened on July 27.
The proposed roads are expected to provide alternative routes for thousands of IT professionals and residents who commute daily in the Hinjewadi-Maan-Marunji corridor. Besides easing peak-hour traffic, the integrated drainage and utility infrastructure is expected to reduce monsoon-related disruptions and improve overall road safety and travel efficiency in one of Pune’s fastest-growing urban regions.
