The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has begun the suspension process for the driving licenses of 200 motorists after Pune police recommended their suspension due to incidents of driving under the influence.

Pune RTO official informed that the suspension action had been initiated following the first police proposal. “While we have the authority to suspend licenses, only a court can permanently cancel them upon conviction for drunk driving,” she stated. The suspensions, ranging from 90 to 120 days, are intended as a penalty for first-time offenses under current laws. In cases of repeat offenders, the RTO has the power to pursue permanent cancellation.

This move follows the tragic October 11 incident in Mundhwa, where a food delivery worker was fatally struck by a drunk driver in an Audi, prompting intensified police action. By the end of October, 2,556 individuals had been fined for drunk driving, and reports for 485 offenders were forwarded to the RTO with requests for license cancellation.

The Pune police are also escalating measures by filing FIRs and seeking court intervention for permanent cancellations in severe cases.
