A video has gained widespread attention, showing a woman washing her hair with toxic foam in the Yamuna River while participating in the Chhath Puja in Delhi. Many devotees were seen taking ritual baths in the river, despite the thick layers of toxic foam that covered its surface. This froth is a result of untreated sewage and industrial waste entering the river, containing harmful chemicals that pose serious health risks.

The Delhi High Court has prohibited devotees from performing the three-day puja along the riverbanks in the capital. The court emphasized the river’s extreme pollution and the potential health risks for those who enter the water.

“Please understand you will fall sick. We can’t allow you (devotees) to go into the water. It is highly polluted. It is a gigantic task; it cannot be done now. We can’t clean up Yamuna in one day’s time,” stated a bench consisting of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.

The court was considering a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Purvanchal Nav Nirman Sansthan, which challenged the Delhi government’s ban on Chhath Puja celebrations along the banks of the Yamuna River. Chhath Puja holds great importance for Delhi’s Purvanchali community, primarily composed of Bhojpuri-speaking individuals from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

In its ruling, the court referenced a recent order from another case, acknowledging that pollution levels in the Yamuna River are at an all-time high. “Considering the aforementioned facts, along with the fact that the Chhath Puja festival begins tomorrow, this court believes that no orders can be issued in the PIL. Therefore, it is dismissed,” stated the bench.
