Pune, 7 July, 2026: Heavy rainfall in Pune district has caused a major road collapse near Madhe Ghat in Rajgad taluka, disrupting connectivity to 13 villages and forcing authorities to shut the route for all traffic. The damaged stretch, located near Kelad Khind, developed a large crack before collapsing due to continuous rain over the past two days.

Officials have closed the road from both directions as a precautionary measure, stating that the route is unsafe until repair work is completed.

The Madhe Ghat region has received around 200 mm of rainfall in the last 48 hours, with relentless showers and strong winds severely affecting infrastructure. The persistent rain weakened the road surface, eventually causing a section of it to give way.

Authorities acted immediately after the collapse was reported, barricading the road to prevent accidents and protect commuters.

The closure has cut off road connectivity to Kelad, Nigde Khurd, Gope, Kumbale, Bhorodi, Pisarvi, Eklagaon, Singapur, Mohari, Kusarapeth, Karanjawadi, Gugulshi and Pangari.

Residents of these villages are now facing significant travel difficulties, with transportation of people, agricultural produce and essential supplies affected.

The road closure is expected to impact ambulance services, school transportation, farmers, daily commuters and others who rely on the route for regular travel. Officials are assessing the damage and will begin restoration work once weather conditions improve.

Tourists planning to visit Madhe Ghat, a popular monsoon destination known for its waterfalls and scenic views, have also been advised to avoid the area until further notice.

Local authorities have appealed to residents and visitors to stay away from the damaged stretch and cooperate with officials during the repair process. They said the road will remain closed until engineers certify it is safe for vehicular movement.

The administration is closely monitoring the situation and has assured affected villagers that efforts are underway to restore connectivity at the earliest while prioritising public safety.
