Maharashtra unveils ambitious plans to expand Mumbai’s Coastal Road, promising faster travel and improved connectivity.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans to extend the under-construction Coastal Road from Nariman Point to Virar in Palghar district. Once completed, this extension will cut travel time between the two locations to just 35-40 minutes, significantly benefiting commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The Coastal Road extension, backed by an investment of ₹54,000 crore from the Japanese government, is set to transform Mumbai’s transportation network. Fadnavis revealed that the tender for the Versova – Madh link has already been issued, and construction on the Madh – Uttan section will begin soon.

The existing Coastal Road project is an 8-lane, 29.2 km expressway along Mumbai’s western coastline. It connects Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north. The first phase, spanning 10.58 km from the Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, was inaugurated on March 11, 2024.

Fadnavis emphasized that this extension will not only ease traffic congestion but also boost infrastructure and economic growth in the region. Additionally, the new Navi Mumbai expansion project and Jawaharlal Nehru Port’s widening are expected to complement the Coastal Road’s impact by enhancing connectivity and promoting development in surrounding areas.

The Coastal Road expansion is poised to become a game-changer for Mumbai, enabling seamless travel and driving progress across the MMR.
