India's sole state lacking a single railway station
This state in India is without any railway station. Read on to learn more about this unique state on the Indian railway map.
Are you aware that Sikkim is the only state in India without a railway station, making train travel there impossible?
The absence of railway infrastructure in Sikkim can largely be attributed to its challenging geography. Nestled in the Himalayas, the state features steep mountains, deep valleys, and narrow passes that complicate the establishment of such facilities.
The geographical challenges in Sikkim have led to a significant reliance on roadways within the existing infrastructure, consequently postponing the necessity for a comprehensive railway network.
Strategic isolation in Sikkim, stemming from its sensitive positioning near international borders and associated security issues, has constrained railway development. This situation has led to a focus on defense and adaptability rather than on extensive infrastructure initiatives such as railways. Sikkim shares its borders with China, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, and experienced a period of isolation from the rest of India following the partition in 1947.
The state places a strong emphasis on protecting its environmental integrity and cultural heritage rather than focusing on railway expansion.
Travelers intending to reach Sikkim by train must disembark at either the Siliguri or Jalpaiguri railway stations located in West Bengal.
However, the scenario is expected to change soon. The state is expected to set up its first railway line.
The Rangpo Railway Station
Rangpo Railway Station is currently being constructed along the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Line in the Pakyong District of Sikkim. The station code is RNGPO. Once completed, it will cater to the needs of Rangpo city and the surrounding districts of Pakyong, Gangtok, and Mangan. The station is situated 38 kilometers (24 miles) from Gangtok, the state capital, and 21 kilometers (13 miles) from Pakyong Airport. Upon its completion, the station will feature three platforms and four railway lines.
Due to unexpected events, including floods and landslides, the project’s completion date has been postponed from the initial target of 2024 to 2025.
