Alibaug’s White Onion Delayed This Year Due To Prolonged Rains
Alibaug: The cultivation of Alibaug’s renowned white onion has commenced later than usual this year due to extended rains delaying the paddy harvest. Traditionally planted after the paddy crop is harvested, the onion’s sowing schedule was pushed back, resulting in a delayed market arrival. Farmers expect the crop to hit the markets by early February.
Known for its medicinal properties, mild pungency, and unique taste, Alibaug’s white onion has seen increasing demand. Recognizing its distinctive qualities, the central government granted it Geographical Indication (GI) status, bolstering its identity and market appeal.
Farmers in Alibaug and nearby villages like Karle, Rule, Nigade, and Vadgaon have been cultivating this variety using traditional methods over approximately 250 hectares. The region produces around 5,000 tons annually, and more farmers are shifting towards white onion farming due to its profitability.
According to the onion farmer, “The delayed rains postponed the paddy harvest, which in turn delayed onion sowing. Despite this, the crop is expected to yield good returns when it arrives in February.”
The GI certification has elevated Alibaug’s white onion, distinguishing it from other white onion varieties grown in Maharashtra and amplifying its demand in domestic and global markets.
