In July, Pimpri-Chinchwad police apprehended four Rohingya individuals—two men and their wives—for allegedly residing in India illegally. Among them, Mujammil Mohammad Amin Khan, 43, was found to have built a house in Pune and acquired Indian identity documents, including passports for himself and his wife. Khan and his family lived in the Dehu Road cantonment area in Pune.

Khan, who previously completed a “Maulana course” at an Islamic institution in Myanmar, initially resided there with his wife and two daughters. In December 2012, they migrated to Bangladesh and settled in a refugee camp. Unable to find work in Bangladesh, Khan learned of job opportunities in West Bengal and decided to move there.

During this time, Khan separated from his first wife and remarried a Rohingya woman named Shafiqa, with whom he had a son. In mid-2013, Khan crossed the international border into India with his second wife and son, reportedly aided by human traffickers. He initially stayed in Kolkata but struggled to secure stable employment.

Khan eventually traveled to Pune by train and found work at a private company in Talegaon MIDC. The company provided accommodation for his family. Investigations revealed that an unidentified company employee may have facilitated the relocation of individuals from Myanmar and Bangladesh to Pune. To boost his income, Khan also started selling children’s clothing sourced from Bhiwandi in Thane district.

The police investigation uncovered that Khan acquired an Aadhaar card for just Rs 500 from a shop in Bhiwandi without providing legitimate documents. Agents allegedly submitted forged paperwork at an Aadhaar enrollment center, enabling Khan to obtain the card. Using this document, he later secured an Aadhaar card for his wife as well. The Aadhaar card became the foundation for other Indian identity documents, including passports.

Authorities in Pune and Goa have been alerted to 65 Indian passports reportedly procured illegally by nationals of Bangladesh and Myanmar. Khan’s house in Dehu Road was locked, and his family was unavailable for comment. The investigation is ongoing, with police continuing efforts to trace the individuals involved in the racket.
