Pune, 21st June 2026: After a prolonged pause in monsoon progress, weather officials expect rainfall activity to strengthen across Maharashtra from June 23, bringing relief to farmers and cities facing water shortages.

After nearly two weeks of sluggish monsoon activity, Maharashtra may finally see widespread rainfall from June 23, according to the latest weather forecasts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that conditions are becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon to regain strength across the state.

The monsoon had reached the Konkan coast on June 6 but its progress slowed considerably over South Maharashtra and several interior regions. The delay has left farmers waiting to begin large-scale sowing operations and has also intensified water concerns in several cities.

Weather experts now say the next 48 hours will be crucial as monsoon winds strengthen and rainfall activity gradually revives across western and central parts of the country.

According to meteorologists, strengthening cross-equatorial winds over the Arabian Sea are expected to support the monsoon’s advance. Rainfall is likely to increase in Konkan, South Maharashtra and several inland districts from June 22 onwards, with more widespread showers expected after June 23.

Pune, which has experienced a delayed monsoon this year, may have to wait a few more days before seeing significant rainfall. Temperatures have remained above normal in many parts of the state due to the prolonged dry spell.

The expected revival comes as many regions continue to face growing concerns over water availability and delayed agricultural operations.

In Marathwada, kharif sowing has remained far below normal levels due to insufficient rainfall. Farmers with irrigation facilities have managed limited sowing of crops such as cotton, while many others are waiting for adequate rainfall before beginning field operations.

Agriculture officials say widespread rainfall over the coming week could help accelerate sowing of soybean, tur, maize, bajra and moong across the region.

“Every additional week of delay increases uncertainty for farmers. A good spell of rain after June 23 could significantly improve sowing activity across several districts,” said Ramesh Deshmukh, an agricultural consultant from Marathwada.

Weather experts caution that while rainfall is expected to improve, the exact intensity and distribution may vary across districts.

“The atmosphere is showing signs of recovery after a brief monsoon pause. The coming days will determine how quickly rainfall spreads across Maharashtra,” said Dr. Meera Kulkarni, a weather researcher.

Residents in urban areas are also hoping for relief from heat and water shortages.

“We’ve been watching the sky every day. If the rains arrive as predicted, it will bring relief to both households and farmers,” said Pune resident Anjali Patil.

The IMD is expected to issue updated forecasts as weather systems evolve over the next few days.

FAQs

When is rainfall expected to increase in Maharashtra?
Rainfall activity is expected to strengthen from June 22, with more widespread rain likely across the state after June 23.

Why has the monsoon been delayed in Maharashtra?
The slowdown was linked to weaker monsoon flow over the Arabian Sea and the absence of supportive low-pressure systems.

Which regions may receive rain first?
Konkan, South Maharashtra and parts of central Maharashtra are expected to see improved rainfall activity before it gradually spreads further inland.

Will Pune receive rainfall soon?
Light rainfall activity is possible in the coming days, but significant monsoon conditions are expected only after the broader revival of monsoon winds.

How has the delay affected farmers?
The lack of rain has delayed kharif sowing across several districts, especially in Marathwada, where many farmers are waiting for adequate soil moisture.

Will the rainfall continue through July?
Officials say it is too early to predict July’s rainfall pattern. A detailed forecast for July and August is expected later this month.

Can water scarcity improve if the forecast is accurate?
Yes. Sustained rainfall can help improve reservoir levels, groundwater recharge and urban water supplies, although the impact will depend on the amount and distribution of rain.
