The Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Flyover on Karve Road sees revised costs as part of Pune’s Metro project upgrades.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved an additional ₹14 crore payment to MahaMetro for constructing the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee flyover at Nal Stop Chowk, Karve Road. This decision was finalized during a standing committee meeting chaired by Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale.
The flyover, designed to alleviate traffic congestion on Karve Road, is part of the larger Vanaz Corner to Ramwadi Metro project. Originally approved in 2020 with an estimated cost of ₹39 crore, the project’s final expenditure reached ₹58 crore. MahaMetro requested an additional ₹19 crore to cover the cost increase.
To assess this claim, PMC engaged the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) as a consultant. After evaluation, COEP determined that ₹14 crore of the additional cost was justified, which PMC has now approved. The funds for this payment are being sourced from the ₹15.80 crore allocated for Metro-related projects in the current municipal budget.
The Vanaz to Ramwadi metro route, which aims to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in Pune, became fully operational in August 2024 with the inauguration of the Yerawada Metro Station. Notably, the Yerawada station features a unique design inspired by the Dandi March, symbolizing India’s freedom movement.
This approval underscores PMC’s commitment to ensuring smooth project execution while addressing financial accountability, bolstering Pune’s infrastructure development efforts.
