The roads are somewhat narrow, and the ghat is notably steep. Not recommended for inexperiennced drivers after dark.

Traveling from North Goa to Rajapur via NH66, a distance of 172 kilometers, is a straightforward journey that can be completed in approximately 2.5 hours.
For those seeking a picturesque drive, the Anuskura Ghat route is highly recommended. Nevertheless, the NH66 route offers notable attractions, such as Raigad Fort, which can be accessed with a brief detour. Regrettably, the segment of NH66 that should be avoided due to poor road conditions is also quite beautiful.
After passing Rajapur, approximately 10 kilometers ahead, you will need to take the service road to access the turn for Oni-Saundal-Pachal. This route follows SH150, which winds through the Anuskura Ghat towards Karad. Although Google Maps may suggest a turn from Kharepatan, it is advisable to disregard that and continue to Rajapur, taking the turn towards Pachal 10 kilometers later.
This segment covers 123 kilometers, with several towns along the way where you can stop for lunch or snacks, including Pachal, Malkapur, Kokrud, Shedewadi, and Undale.
The road conditions are generally good, but be aware that the ghat section features narrower roads and a steep incline. Inexperienced drivers should avoid attempting this stretch after dark, as it can take up to 3 hours to navigate this area, and longer if you decide to pause and take in the scenery.
The state highway meets NH48 approximately 7 kilometers before Karad, near the McDonald’s. Over the past few years, NH48 has experienced significant deterioration, resulting in a less smooth driving experience from Karad to Pune and Navi Mumbai compared to previous years. The overall distance on NH48 from Karad to Navi Mumbai is roughly 289 kilometers. Traffic on NH66 is significantly lighter compared to NH48.
Consequently, if one diverts from NH66 to connect with NH48 via Anuskura Ghat, the total distance will be about 584 kilometers. In contrast, sticking to NH66 will cover approximately 526 kilometers, leading to a difference of around 58 to 60 kilometers.
Also, There are certain areas along NH66 that are currently under construction and should be avoided if feasible, particularly the segment between Sangameshwar and Lanja.
When traveling with family and seeking suitable lunch stops, the NH48 route offers a greater variety of options compared to NH66. The primary town along the NH66 route is Chiplun, which notably lacks a McDonald’s drive-in, a feature available on the alternative route.
In addition, there are several regular dhabas and a Vithal Kamat, but no upscale dining options are available before or after Chiplun.
