In a bid to ensure the safety of school-going children, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a special drive to check school vehicles plying on the city’s roads. The move comes after Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole raised concerns about the safety of school buses in the state assembly.

According to Pune RTO Archana Gaikwad, the drive, which began on Wednesday, aims to identify school vehicles operating without valid fitness certificates. “We have found that many vehicles, despite having permits, do not have fitness certificates. We will be checking all aspects of school vehicle transport to ensure that they are complying with the rules,” Gaikwad said.

The RTO’s crackdown on school vehicles without fitness certificates has revealed some startling figures. Out of 6,368 vehicles with valid permits to carry students, only 5,103 have valid fitness certificates. This means that 1,265 vehicles are operating without valid fitness certificates, putting the lives of thousands of school-going children at risk.

Parents have welcomed the RTO’s move, but have expressed concerns about the safety of their children. “It’s shocking to know that so many school vehicles are operating without fitness certificates. The RTO should take strict action against such vehicles and ensure that they are not allowed to ply on the roads,” said Rutuja Patil, a parent.

The RTO has assured that it will take strict action against school vehicles found to be violating the rules. “We will be conducting regular checks and will take action against vehicles found to be operating without valid fitness certificates,” Gaikwad said while talking to the media

The Pune RTO’s crackdown on school vehicles without fitness certificates is a welcome move, and parents and citizens will be eagerly waiting to see the results of this drive.
