Bengaluru to Get 40-KM Tunnel Road: A Game-Changer for Traffic Congestion
Bengaluru is set to receive a 40-km tunnel road aimed at alleviating the city’s severe traffic congestion.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the tunnel has already been finalized by the BBMP, according to reports.
What the Tunnel Will Cover?
The 40 km tunnel will consist of two primary corridors:
An 18 km north-south tunnel that connects the Hebbal flyover in the north to the Silk Board junction in the south.
A 22 km east-west tunnel that links KR Puram in the east to Mysore Road in the west.
The feasibility study indicates that a single-tube tunnel will be more economical compared to a twin-tube tunnel.
To finance this ambitious project, the BBMP intends to secure a loan of Rs 19,000 crore from the open market, with the state government agreeing to serve as a guarantor for the loan.
BBMP plans to utilize private investment for the construction of a portion of the tunnel. If this initiative proves successful, part of the loan will also be allocated to fund a different underground road linking KR Puram to Nayandahalli.
Phases and Costs of the Project
The project will be executed in two stages:
Stage 1: The north-south corridor, which runs from Hebbal to Silk Board, is projected to cost Rs 16,500 crore, not including expenses for land acquisition. The BBMP is set to invest Rs 6,500 crore, while the remaining amount will be funded by private investors.
Stage 2: The second stage consists of a 28-km underground road from KR Puram to Nayandahalli, with an estimated cost of Rs 25,000 crore. Work on this stage has not yet commenced.
