Expert Doctor Shortage Hits YCMH In Pimpri As Recruitment Drive Sees Low ResponseÂ
The Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) in Pimpri is grappling with a severe shortage of expert doctors, despite conducting a recruitment drive. The hospital has received a dismal response to its recruitment drive, with few applications for the available positions.
YCMH is in dire need of eight expert doctors, including anaesthesiologists, radiologists, intensivists, a neurosurgeon, and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. However, the recruitment drive has yielded meager results, with only one application received for the post of intensivist, despite two vacancies.
The hospital’s struggles to find expert doctors have raised concerns about the impact on patient care. With a large number of patients from rural areas of Pune preferring YCMH for treatment, the hospital is already stretched to its limits. The hospital’s postgraduate institute also utilizes the services of doctors, further exacerbating the staff shortage.
According to Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) officials, the hospital requires additional staff, particularly anaesthesiologists, to fill the vacant positions. The officials attributed the poor response to the recruitment drive to the delayed admission of the 2022 batch due to the Covid pandemic, which has resulted in fewer senior resident doctors being available.
With the hospital undertaking an average of 10-12 operations daily in three shifts, the need to fill the vacant positions is pressing. The PCMC officials emphasized that filling the vacant positions is a priority to ensure that patients receive adequate care.
