Pune, 27th December 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to auction 2,000 properties whose owners have failed to pay property taxes. These properties collectively owe approximately Rs 200 crore in arrears, and the auction is expected to conclude by March 2025. However, concerns remain about the response to this auction, given the poor turnout during previous attempts.

PMC’s Taxation and Tax Collection Department is currently dealing with property tax arrears amounting to nearly Rs 10,000 crore across Pune. In an effort to recover these dues, the administration has already sealed 2,600 properties this year, of which 2,000 will now be auctioned in a single phase. Properties involved in legal disputes are also being sealed.

To streamline the process, a dedicated team has been set up to manage the auction. According to Madhav Jagtap, Head of the Taxation and Tax Collection Department, the team will focus on key tasks such as determining property valuations, issuing notices to defaulters, and organizing the auction.

As of now, PMC has collected Rs 1,870 crore in property tax revenue against a target of Rs 2,727 crore for the current financial year. Achieving this goal has become challenging due to the Maharashtra State Government’s stay on collecting property tax from 34 newly included villages. To compensate, PMC is intensifying its efforts to recover arrears from other areas, which has resulted in the sealing and planned auctioning of properties.
