BJP To Contest Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Election Independently
Pimpri: The BJP has announced its decision to contest the upcoming Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) election independently, following the directives of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. BJP city president and Chinchwad MLA Shankar Jagtap emphasized the party’s determination to regain sole power in the municipal corporation.
For 15 years, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) held unchallenged dominance over the PCMC under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. However, in 2017, the BJP broke this streak, gaining control of the civic body for the first time. Currently, with Ajit Pawar as part of the BJP-led alliance, there were speculations about whether the two parties would contest together or separately. This decision by the BJP puts an end to those speculations.
Jagtap stated that the BJP will contest all 128 seats in the municipal elections. While the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections witnessed a grand alliance, local body elections will see the BJP going solo. The party aims to surpass its previous tally of 77 corporators. Ajit Pawar has also indicated that his faction of the NCP plans to contest local elections independently.
Jagtap criticized the current administrative governance, pointing out delays in public works and issues related to water supply, roads, and healthcare. He highlighted significant traffic congestion in areas like Wakad, Hinjewadi, and Pimple Saudagar and urged municipal authorities and the police to implement solutions. Jagtap assured that efforts are underway to streamline the city’s water supply by March or April under the guidance of the municipal commissioner.
