The Indian Health Ministry is closely monitoring the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, but officials say there’s no cause for alarm yet. While China has reported a surge in HMPV cases, especially among children under 14, India hasn’t seen an unusual spike in winter respiratory diseases.

HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory infections in people of all ages, with symptoms like cough, fever, and shortness of breath. The virus is most contagious during late winter and early spring, and can spread through coughing, sneezing, and close personal contact.

Director-General of Health Services Atul Goel assured while talking to the media person that hospitals in India are equipped to deal with respiratory illnesses, and special medicines aren’t needed since there are no anti-viral drugs against HMPV. The National Centre for Disease Control is also keeping a close eye on respiratory and seasonal influenza cases in the country’s.

Indian health officials emphasized that HMPV is like any other respiratory virus, causing flu-like symptoms mostly in the elderly and children. While the situation is being closely monitored, there’s no substantial increase in cases reported for respiratory illness in India.
