The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a February 15 deadline for housing societies to submit applications for a rebate on property tax for implementing green initiatives. The rebate, which can be up to 10% of the property tax, is available for societies that have implemented projects such as vermiculture composting, solar energy, and rainwater harvesting.

According to the PMC’s environment status report for 2023-24, over 1.28 lakh properties opted for a rebate in the last financial year under various categories. This includes 83,300 properties that implemented rainwater harvesting and vermicomposting, and over 4,500 properties that implemented all three projects. To be eligible for the rebate, societies must submit their applications to the local ward offices during working hours.

The PMC has warned that the rebate will be withdrawn if the projects are found to be non-functional during spot inspections. In fact, officials have already found many defaulters during inspections. “In cases where projects are not running properly, the rebate granted will be withdrawn,” a civic official said.

Residents have urged the civic administration to provide more details and educate people on how to run these projects successfully. Resident from a housing society in Navi Peth said, “PMC should target the errant societies and educate people on how the projects can run without failure.” The PMC’s solid waste management department had held meetings with housing societies last year to create awareness about vermicomposting and rainwater harvesting projects.

With the deadline fast approaching, housing societies are encouraged to submit their applications and take advantage of the rebate on property tax. The rebate structure allows societies that have implemented one project to receive a 5% rebate, while those that have implemented two projects can receive a 10% rebate.
