Pune: Repeated Road Digging In D-Mart Lane In Kalyani Nagar Causes Chaos; Residents Demand Accountability
Pune: Residents of Wadgaonsheri in Pune have raised serious concerns over the repeated road digging on D-Mart Lane, which has disrupted daily life and traffic in the area. Over the past six months, the road has been excavated multiple times, leaving residents and commuters frustrated.
Despite the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) “Guidelines for Road Trenching Activity,” key aspects of transparency and accountability appear to have been ignored.
Haresh Bharwani, a Kalyani Nagar resident said that the PMC must ensure that the road must resurfaced once the work is over. Firstly, all the works of laying pipeline, cables must be done at once. Just about six months ago the road was dug up to lay water lines. Now again for gas pipeline. There is no accountability in such works. Why are information boards missing from such works ? Development works must be transparent.
Manohar Mali from Pune Municipal Corporation stated that he shall look into the issue.
Key Issues Raised by Residents:
- Frequent Excavations:
The road has been dug up several times within a short period, causing inconvenience and affecting the functionality of the area. - Lack of Transparency:
- No public information on the purpose of the work.
- Absence of details regarding contractors or project timelines.
- Uncertainty about whether the work is authorized by PMC.
- Impact on Residents:
- Traffic Disruptions: Prolonged delays and chaotic traffic conditions have become a daily challenge for commuters.
- Noise Pollution: Continuous construction noise has significantly affected the quality of life in the neighborhood.
Violation of PMC Guidelines:
- No visible boards or notices detailing the trenching activity as mandated.
- Lack of prior public notification about the nature and duration of the project.
Demands for Accountability:
Residents have called for transparency and accountability regarding the repeated digging. Concerns have also been raised about dust pollution, uneven road leveling, and the absence of preventive measures to minimize the impact on health and safety.
The residents have questioned whether PMC plans to take corrective measures, including penalties for contractors, rectification orders, or even blacklisting of repeat offenders.
“We are left in the dark about who is responsible and why the work is being done in such a fragmented manner,” said a local resident.
Call for Action:
The residents have urged PMC to investigate the issue, ensure compliance with guidelines, and take corrective steps to restore order and address the concerns of the Wadgaonsheri community.
This issue highlights broader concerns regarding urban governance, planning, and the need for stricter enforcement of regulations to protect the interests of residents.
