He described the city as a “powerhouse” for research, development, ammunition, and vehicle manufacturing.
Significance of the Southern Command
General Dwivedi highlighted the pivotal role of the Southern Command, headquartered in Pune. He noted that it is one of the largest commands, covering 11 states and three Union Territories—amounting to 41% of India’s land area. The command oversees three naval and four air force headquarters, ensuring smooth coordination for defense operations.
“The Southern Command is instrumental in fostering joint military exercises with other nations and managing industries vital for the defense sector,” General Dwivedi remarked. He emphasized its role in adopting advanced technologies, driving research and development, and facilitating production, which will be critical for transformative changes in the future.
Focus on Indigenous Defense Production
The event showcased India’s strides in self-reliance. General Dwivedi revealed that 85% of the Indian Army’s capital expenditure now goes toward indigenous products.
“Everything displayed during the parade—from robots to Vajra tanks—was made in India. Self-reliance involves mental and industrial independence, driving us toward the vision of a developed India through an Indian lens,” he stated.
Future Army Day Celebrations
Looking ahead, General Dwivedi announced plans to expand the Army Day celebrations. Cities like Guwahati, Jaipur, Bhopal, and Jabalpur are being considered as future parade venues. A dedicated committee will assess the facilities required for hosting these events.
He also expressed intentions to include defense veterans and industries in next year’s celebrations. “This will further strengthen our connection with those who contribute to the defense sector and encourage greater participation in shaping India’s self-reliant defense future,” he added.
