Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to install CCTV cameras in all-girls schools under its jurisdiction. The first phase of the initiative will see the installation of cameras in 80 such schools, with a budget of ₹3.80 crore approved for this purpose.

PMC manages around 350 schools, including co-ed, all-girls, and all-boys schools. While 250 of these schools have security guards, the coverage is considered inadequate. A joint survey conducted by PMC’s Electrical and Education Departments assessed the infrastructure of these schools, including the number of classrooms and entry points. The estimated cost of installing CCTV cameras across all 350 schools stands at ₹17 crore. However, due to budget limitations, PMC has decided to roll out the project in phases. The initial ₹3.80 crore will cover 80 all-girls schools, with the remaining schools to be included in the 2024-25 municipal budget.

The decision comes in response to concerns raised by citizens and parents about the presence of anti-social elements on school premises. It aims to enhance the security of girl students and improve the overall infrastructure. The initiative will cover schools in both the city and the 32 newly merged villages.

Manisha Shektakar, Head of the Electrical Department, PMC, stated, “The CCTV cameras will be installed by the end of March, with the rest of the schools being covered next year. Our priority is to secure PMC’s all-girls schools. Cameras have already been installed in 60 co-ed schools.”
