Missi Roti Listed as One of the World's Worst Dishes by Taste Atlas, Social Media Explodes
India’s traditional and nutritious Missi Roti has been included in Taste Atlas’s list of “World’s Worst Dishes,” sparking widespread outrage online. The January 2025 list ranked Missi Roti 56th among 100 poorly rated dishes globally. It is the only Indian dish on the list, leaving many Indians furious.
Missi Roti is a traditional Punjabi dish made with gram flour, spices, and vegetables. It is gluten-free and considered a healthy superfood, often enjoyed with North Indian meals. Despite its nutritious value, the dish was grouped with unconventional items like jelly eels, frog eye salad, deviled kidneys, and blood dumplings.
Social media erupted with criticism of the list. One Reddit user called it a deliberate attempt to tarnish Indian cuisine, saying, “Looks like they included an Indian dish just to prove not every Indian dish is perfect.” Another suggested that other items like eggplant or bitter gourd could have been listed instead of Missi Roti.
Taste Atlas’s perceived bias was also questioned. Some users pointed out that the list heavily featured Spanish dishes while ignoring many Nordic cuisines. Others argued that taste is subjective and criticized the inclusion of a dish beloved by many.
Supporters highlighted the nutritional value of Missi Roti. Rich in fiber, protein, and essential nutrients, it forms a vital part of Indian meals and is a symbol of the country’s culinary heritage.
The controversy has reignited debates about cultural biases in global food rankings and the representation of Indian cuisine. Despite its placement on the list, Missi Roti remains a cherished dish in Indian households.
