Pune News: MPCB Warns Reliance Jio Infocomm Over Noise Pollution In Hinjawadi, Demands Action Within 15 Days
MPCB To Audit Sewage Treatment And Waste Segregation In Housing Societies, Violators To Face Action
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a formal notice to Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. regarding noise pollution caused by its chiller lines in Hinjawadi. The company has been directed to take immediate measures to mitigate the environmental impact and ensure compliance with state regulations.
The notice, signed by JS Salunkhe, Regional Officer of MPCB Pune, was issued under the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. This action follows a legal proposal by the Sub-Regional Officer, Pune-II, and a hearing conducted on December 26, 2024, at the MPCB headquarters in Mumbai.
The Board has instructed Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. to install noise barriers around its chiller lines within three months. The company must submit a time-bound action plan for this task within seven days. The chiller units, critical for operating the company’s data centres, have been identified as the source of high-decibel noise affecting the local community.
“The Board has taken this matter seriously. The installation of noise barriers is crucial to reduce the impact on the environment and the well-being of nearby residents,” Salunkhe said.

Residents in the area have lodged multiple complaints about the excessive noise levels disrupting their daily lives. Observations by the MPCB confirmed that the noise pollution was significant enough to warrant immediate action.
Reliance Jio has been given a 15-day window to submit a report detailing the actions taken to address the issue. The Board has warned that failure to comply with these directives could result in fines or further legal action.
“The Board expects swift compliance. If the company fails to meet the deadlines, stricter measures will be implemented,” Salunkhe reiterated in the notice.
The MPCB’s actions reflect its ongoing efforts to tackle environmental issues across Maharashtra, particularly noise pollution in urban areas. The directive to Reliance Jio is part of this larger initiative to ensure businesses adhere to environmental norms and minimize their impact on communities.
By holding companies accountable, the Board aims to create a balance between industrial growth and environmental sustainability.
