Pune News: Residents Demand Completion Of Pending DP Roads In Dhayari, To Hold Hunger Strike Against PMC On January 26
Pune: On January 26, Republic Day, residents and leaders from various political parties in Dhayari and Sinhagad road areas will stage a peaceful hunger strike to protest against the prolonged delays in Development Plan (DP) roads and severe traffic congestion in the region. Pune’s ranking as the fourth most congested city in the world has further fueled the agitation.
The hunger strike will be held from 10 AM to 5 PM at Umbrya Ganpati Chowk near the last bus stop in Dhayari. Around 1,000 citizens, including 500 women and 500 men, are expected to participate in the protest, according to Dhananjay Benkar, City President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Benkar, along with Nilesh Damishte, Sunny Raikar, and other citizens, submitted a memorandum to Police Inspector Ajay Bhos of Nanded City Police Station, demanding action on the neglected issues.
Despite 28 years passing since the planning of DP roads in Dhayari, no substantial progress has been made. Most DP roads remain on paper, exacerbating traffic congestion due to a lack of alternative routes. Citizens face daily hardships, particularly on the Savitri Garden to Sinhagad Road stretch, where despite significant funds being allocated, only 400 meters of road work has been completed.
Benkar criticized the poor traffic management in the area, highlighting the absence of sufficient police personnel, home guards, traffic wardens, and functioning signals. This has made areas such as Dhayari Village Road, Narhe-Dhayari, and Nanded Phata to Lagad Mala among the worst-affected zones.
Damishte pointed out that the DP roads were planned nearly three decades ago, yet land acquisition and implementation remain incomplete. The situation has worsened due to partial land acquisition in some areas, leaving citizens stranded in a perpetual traffic crisis.
