Kailash Mansarovar Yatra to Resume in 2025 as India and China Strengthen Ties
India and China are taking steps to strengthen their bilateral relations by resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
India and China have reached an agreement to restart the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and establish direct flights between the two countries in 2025, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.
India and China are taking steps to strengthen their bilateral relations by resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which had been halted since 2020. During a meeting between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, both nations also reached a preliminary agreement to restart direct flights.
Despite the improvement in the COVID-19 situation, efforts to resume the yatra were stalled due to ongoing tensions between the two countries.
“In this context, the two sides decided to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in the summer of 2025; the relevant mechanism will discuss the modalities for doing so as per existing agreements. They also agreed to hold an early meeting of the India-China Expert Level Mechanism to discuss resumption of provision of hydrological data and other cooperation pertaining to trans-border rivers,” says the Ministry of External Affairs.
Vikram Misri was on a two-day visit to Beijing for a meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism between India and China. The meeting, in line with agreements made between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Russia’s Kazan in October, saw both sides agreeing to take significant steps to stabilize and improve bilateral ties.
Both countries acknowledge that 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China, and this occasion should be leveraged to enhance public diplomacy initiatives aimed at fostering greater understanding and rebuilding mutual trust among their citizens. A series of commemorative events will be organized to celebrate this significant milestone.
