Surge in Demand for 20-Litre Mineral Water Containers in Pune Amid Rising GBS Concerns
The demand for 20-litre mineral water containers has surged in several areas of Pune as residents turn to packaged water for drinking and cooking amidst the rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in certain localities has heightened concerns over water safety.
Mineral water suppliers reported that orders have doubled in the last four to five days, especially in Kondhwa, Undri, and Hadapsar. These areas rely heavily on water tankers, increasing concerns about water quality. The trend is particularly strong around Sinhagad Road, where multiple GBS cases have been reported.
Suppliers say they are struggling to meet the rising demand, leading to temporary shortages. Many housing societies have advised residents to use mineral water for consumption. Some families have also started using it for washing vegetables, bathing babies, and other daily needs.
Shopkeepers in GBS-affected areas reported depleting stocks and longer waiting periods for supply. The sudden increase in demand has led to supply chain disruptions in some neighbourhoods.
Healthcare professionals have urged residents to ensure water safety during this period. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has issued an advisory recommending that people drink boiled water to prevent infections.
With concerns over GBS spreading, residents continue to rely on packaged water, adding pressure on suppliers to keep up with the growing demand.
