Pune, January 30, 2025: In a tragic yet inspiring turn of events, a 17-year-old girl, who had recently celebrated her birthday on January 25, lost her life in a devastating road accident at Narayangaon. She was a pillion rider when the accident occurred, leading to severe injuries. Despite all medical efforts, she was declared brain dead at Manipal Hospital, Baner.

Amid their profound grief, her parents, humble laborers, made a selfless and courageous decision—to donate their daughter’s organs, offering a second chance at life to multiple recipients. Their generosity has been hailed as an act of immense kindness and strength.

According to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), her organs were allocated as per guidelines:

  • One kidney was transplanted into a 39-year-old female at Manipal Hospital, Baner.
  • One kidney and pancreas were allocated to a 37-year-old female at Jupiter Hospital.
  • Her liver was split, with one part transplanted into a 5-year-old boy at Sahyadri Hospital, Deccan Gymkhana, and the other to a 43-year-old male at Sahyadri Hospital, Nagar Road.
  • Her lungs were donated to a 33-year-old female at Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College.

All transplants were successfully conducted on January 29, and the recipients are currently in stable condition.

Dr Bipin Vibhute, Head of the Liver and Multi-Organ Transplant Department at Sahyadri Hospitals stated, “We received this liver from another city hospital in Pune. Given the increasing waitlists for organ transplants and the scarcity of available donations, we utilized the split liver transplant technique. This method involves dividing a single deceased donor’s liver into two parts. In this case, we had a 6-year-old recipient at our Deccan facility suffering from Wilson’s disease, characterized by a sudden, severe decline in liver function and elevated bilirubin levels. Prior to transplantation, we performed an emergency plasma exchange to stabilize the child. We transplanted 30% of the donor liver, specifically the left lobe, to this young patient. The remaining portion was transferred to our Nagar Road facility, where it was transplanted into a 43-year-old male patient suffering from chronic liver disease, a progressive condition that damages the liver over time. Both recipients are local to Pune. Successfully splitting a deceased donor’s liver to transplant into two individuals is challenging. It requires precise selection of recipients and swift, coordinated procedures to ensure the liver spends minimal time outside the body. Everything must align perfectly to achieve a successful outcome.”

This heart-wrenching yet hopeful story highlights the profound impact of organ donation, turning an unimaginable loss into a gift of life for others.
